Jnana — true knowledge — is not mere information but the direct experience of one's eternal nature. These shlokas illuminate the path from ignorance to divine wisdom.

This guide brings together 5 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on wisdom and right knowledge, drawn from chapters 2, 4, 10 and 13.

The Gita distinguishes ordinary information from real wisdom. Real knowing is not just facts in the head — it is character, clear sight, and the steady understanding that transforms how one lives.

yasya sarve samārambhāḥ kāma-saṅkalpa-varjitāḥ jñānāgni-dagdha-karmāṇaṁ tam āhuḥ paṇḍitaṁ budhāḥ

He whose undertakings are all devoid of desires and selfish purposes, and whose actions have been burned by the fire of knowledge, the wise call him a sage.

dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṁ yauvanaṁ jarā tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati

Just as the embodied soul passes, in this body, through childhood, youth and old age, so it passes into another body at death. The wise are not deluded by this.

amānitvam adambhitvam ahinsā kṣhāntir ārjavam āchāryopāsanaṁ śhauchaṁ sthairyam ātma-vinigrahaḥ

Humility, unpretentiousness, non-injury, forgiveness, uprightness, service to the teacher, purity, steadfastness, and self-control.

tasmād ajñāna-sambhūtaṁ hṛit-sthaṁ jñānāsinātmanaḥ chhittvainaṁ sanśhayaṁ yogam ātiṣhṭhottiṣhṭha bhārata

Therefore, with the sword of knowledge (of the Self), cut asunder the doubt of the self, born of ignorance, residing in your heart, and take refuge in Yoga. Arise, O Arjuna!

teṣhāṁ satata-yuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te

To those who are ever steadfast, worshipping me with love, I give the yoga of discrimination, by which they come to me.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about wisdom?

Krishna teaches that true knowledge is humility, nonviolence, patience, honesty, equanimity and steady self-awareness (13.7–11). Wisdom shows up as a settled, kind, undeluded life.

Which Gita verses are about wisdom and knowledge?

Gita 4.34 (approach the wise with humility), 4.38 (nothing as purifying as knowledge), 13.7–11 (qualities of knowledge), 7.2 (knowledge and realization), and 18.20–22 (sattvic, rajasic, tamasic knowledge) are the wisdom-core.

How do I gain wisdom from the Gita?

Read less and live more of what you read. A single verse genuinely absorbed does more than many shloka memorised but not practised.
