Mind & Emotions

When darkness descends and hope seems lost, the Gita's light never dims. Lord Krishna's words to a despairing Arjuna speak directly to the wounded heart — offering the soul a way back to life.

This guide brings together 5 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on dealing with depression and hopelessness, drawn from chapters 2, 5 and 18.

The Gita opens with Arjuna's despair — the very first chapter is called 'The Yoga of Arjuna's Sorrow'. Krishna doesn't dismiss the pain; he sits with it, then patiently shows a wider ground than the one despair was standing on. 1.

mātrā-sparśhās tu kaunteya śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ āgamāpāyino ’nityās tans-titikṣhasva bhārata

The contact of the senses with the objects, O son of Kunti, which causes heat and cold, pleasure and pain, has a beginning and an end; they are impermanent; endure them bravely, O Arjuna.

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛityur dhruvaṁ janma mṛitasya cha tasmād aparihārye ’rthe na tvaṁ śhochitum arhasi

For the born, death is certain, and for the dead, birth is certain; therefore, you should not grieve over the inevitable.

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja ahaṁ tvā sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

Abandoning all duties, take refuge in me alone. I shall liberate you from all sins; do not grieve.

bāhya-sparśheṣhvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yat sukham sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā sukham akṣhayam aśhnute

With the self unattached to external contacts, he finds happiness in the Self; with the self engaged in the meditation of Brahman, he attains endless happiness.

    duḥkheṣhv-anudvigna-manāḥ sukheṣhu vigata-spṛihaḥ vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhaḥ sthita-dhīr munir uchyate

He whose mind is not shaken by adversity, who does not long for pleasures, and is free from attachment, fear, and anger, is called a sage of steady wisdom.
