Commentary

"Bijam mam sarva-bhutanam viddhi partha sanatanam, buddhir buddhimatam asmi tejas tejasvinam aham." — Know Me, O Partha, as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intelligence of the intelligent and the splendor of the splendid. Krishna continues the contemplative series with a powerful new image: 'bijam mam sarva-bhutanam ... sanatanam' — I am the eternal seed of all beings. A seed is that from which the entire tree grows, containing within itself the potential of the whole plant. Krishna is the 'sanatana' (eternal, beginningless) seed from which all beings spring — the original source-potential from which all life and existence unfold. Shankaracharya notes the depth of 'sanatanam' (eternal): unlike an ordinary seed which itself arose from a previous tree, Krishna is the eternal, uncaused seed — the ultimate origin that itself has no origin. Then, continuing the pattern of identifying with the essential quality: 'buddhir buddhimatam asmi' — I am the intelligence of the intelligent. The very faculty of intelligence that the wise possess is a divine presence. 'Tejah tejasvinam' — I am the splendor (radiant power, brilliance, energy) of the splendid. Whatever is impressive, luminous, or powerful in any being derives its quality from the Divine. The teaching deepens the practice: not just is God the essence within things, but God is the very source-seed of all that exists, and the highest quality wherever excellence appears. Wherever you encounter genuine intelligence, genuine brilliance, genuine excellence — you are encountering an expression of the Divine.

How is Bhagavad Gita 7.10 relevant to modern life?

Krishna calls himself the 'eternal seed' of all beings — the original source-potential from which everything unfolds, like a seed containing an entire tree. And then: 'I am the intelligence of the intelligent, the brilliance of the brilliant.' This is a humbling and ennobling thought at once. Whatever genuine intelligence, talent, or excellence you possess isn't in truth your private possession to be proud of — it's a divine quality expressing through you. This dissolves both arrogance and insecurity: your gifts aren't yours to boast about, but they're also genuinely sacred and worth honoring. When you encounter brilliance in others, you're seeing the same source shine through them. Excellence anywhere becomes a window onto the Divine.

What does Bhagavad Gita 7.10 teach today's generation (Gen Z & millennials)?

Krishna calls himself the 'eternal seed' of all beings — the original source-potential everything unfolds from, like a seed holding an entire tree inside it. Then: 'I am the intelligence of the intelligent, the brilliance of the brilliant.' This is humbling and ennobling at the same time. Whatever real intelligence, talent, or excellence you've got isn't when it comes to it YOUR private thing to flex about — it's a divine quality expressing through you. This dissolves both arrogance AND insecurity: your gifts aren't yours to brag about, but they're also genuinely sacred and worth honoring. And when you see brilliance in others, you're watching the same source shine through them. Excellence anywhere becomes a window onto the Divine.

What does Bhagavad Gita 7.10 mean explained simply for kids?

Krishna shares another beautiful truth: 'I am the eternal seed of all beings!' Just like a tiny seed grows into a huge tree, everything in the world grows from God — the original seed of it all! And he says: 'I am the smartness in smart people and the shining brightness in brilliant people!' So whenever you use your clever mind or someone shows amazing talent, that wonderful ability is a gift from God shining through! Your gifts are special and sacred — use them to do good things!
