Gita Verses on the Soul (Atman) and Who You Really Are

Who am I, beyond body and mind? The Gita's teaching on the Atman (the eternal Self) is the heart of self-knowledge. These verses reveal the soul as indestructible, unborn, and untouched by fire, water, or time — the changeless witness within every being.

This guide brings together 7 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on the soul (atman) and who you really are, drawn from chapters 2, 13 and 15.

The Gita's atman is the unchanging, indestructible reality behind every life. Weapons don't cut it, fire doesn't burn it, water doesn't wet it. Knowing this changes how you stand in your own life.

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre

The soul is never born and never dies; nor, having once been, does it ever cease to be. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.

nainaṁ chindanti śastrāṇi nainaṁ dahati pāvakaḥ na cainaṁ kledayanty āpo na śoṣayati mārutaḥ

Weapons cannot cut the soul, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, and wind cannot dry it.

achchhedyo ’yam adāhyo ’yam akledyo ’śhoṣhya eva cha nityaḥ sarva-gataḥ sthāṇur achalo ’yaṁ sanātanaḥ

This Self cannot be cut, burned, wetted, nor dried up; it is eternal, all-pervasive, stable, immovable, and ancient.

avyakto ’yam achintyo ’yam avikāryo ’yam uchyate tasmādevaṁ viditvainaṁ nānuśhochitum arhasi

This Self is said to be unmanifested, unthinkable, and unchangeable. Therefore, knowing this to be so, you should not grieve.

yadā bhūta-pṛithag-bhāvam eka-stham anupaśhyati tata eva cha vistāraṁ brahma sampadyate tadā

When a person sees all beings as resting in the One and emanating from the One alone, they then become Brahman.

    mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ manaḥ-ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi prakṛti-sthāni karṣati

An eternal fragment of my own self becomes the living soul in the world of life, and draws to itself the five senses and the mind, which rest in nature.

avināśhi tu tadviddhi yena sarvam idaṁ tatam vināśham avyayasyāsya na kaśhchit kartum arhati

Know that to be indestructible, by which all this is pervaded. No one can cause the destruction of that, the Imperishable.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about the soul (atman)?

Krishna teaches that the atman is unborn, eternal, undying — not slain when the body is slain (2.20). It is finer than the finest and yet pervades everything. The body is its garment, not its essence.

Which Gita verses describe the soul?

Gita 2.20 (unborn, eternal), 2.23–24 (cannot be cut, burnt, wet, dried), 13.31 (the Self in the body neither acts nor is stained), 15.7 (each soul is an eternal part of the divine), and 2.13 (the wise see the unchanging amid change) describe the atman.

How do I know my own soul using the Gita?

Sit quietly and notice the awareness that is reading these words. Not the words, not the thoughts — the awareness itself. Patient attention to that opens the door.
