Strength & Growth

In the age of comparison culture and social media anxiety, the Gita's timeless wisdom is more relevant than ever. These shlokas teach contentment, non-comparison, and unshakeable inner peace.

This guide brings together 4 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on social media pressure and fomo, drawn from chapters 2, 5 and 12.

The Gita didn't know feeds and likes, but its diagnosis of restless attention, comparison and addiction-by-craving applies precisely. Reduce the inputs that scatter you; increase the practice that gathers you.

āpūryamāṇam achala-pratiṣhṭhaṁ samudram āpaḥ praviśhanti yadvat tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśhanti sarve sa śhāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī

He attains peace into whom all desires enter, just as waters enter the ocean which, filled from all sides, remains unmoved; but not the man who is full of desires.

bāhya-sparśheṣhvasaktātmā vindatyātmani yat sukham sa brahma-yoga-yuktātmā sukham akṣhayam aśhnute

With the self unattached to external contacts, he finds happiness in the Self; with the self engaged in the meditation of Brahman, he attains endless happiness.

adveṣhṭā sarva-bhūtānāṁ maitraḥ karuṇa eva cha nirmamo nirahankāraḥ sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ kṣhamī

He who hates no creature, is friendly and compassionate to all, is free from attachment and egoism, is balanced in pleasure and pain, and is forgiving.

    duḥkheṣhv-anudvigna-manāḥ sukheṣhu vigata-spṛihaḥ vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhaḥ sthita-dhīr munir uchyate

He whose mind is not shaken by adversity, who does not long for pleasures, and is free from attachment, fear, and anger, is called a sage of steady wisdom.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about social media and distraction?

Krishna teaches that the senses, when allowed to roam freely after objects, carry the mind away (2.67), and that the restless mind must be steadied through practice and dispassion (6.35). The same principle covers endless scrolling.

Which Gita verses help with social media addiction?

Gita 2.62–63 (attachment leads to ruin), 2.67 (the senses sweep the mind away), 6.35 (practice and dispassion tame the mind), 14.22–25 (the gunatita lets states pass), and 16.21 (give up the gates of self-destruction) all apply.

How do I use social media wisely using the Gita?

Notice the craving before you reach for the phone, not after. One conscious breath between impulse and action is the whole practice in seed form.
