This guide brings together 5 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on encouragement and motivation, drawn from chapters 2, 3, 11 and 18.
The Gita is, at its heart, one long encouragement to a man who wanted to give up. Across these verses, Krishna reassures Arjuna — and the reader — that no sincere effort toward the good is ever wasted.
- Verse 1 of 5Bhagavad Gita 2.3 →
klaibyaṁ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitat tvayyupapadyate kṣhudraṁ hṛidaya-daurbalyaṁ tyaktvottiṣhṭha parantapa
Do not yield to impotence, O Arjuna, son of Pritha. It does not befit you. Cast off this mean weakness of the heart! Stand up, O conqueror of foes!
- Verse 2 of 5Bhagavad Gita 11.33 →
tasmāt tvam uttiṣhṭha yaśho labhasva jitvā śhatrūn bhuṅkṣhva rājyaṁ samṛiddham mayaivaite nihatāḥ pūrvam eva nimitta-mātraṁ bhava savya-sāchin
Therefore, stand up and obtain fame. Conquer the enemies and enjoy the unparalleled kingdom. Verily, by Me they have already been slain; be thou a mere instrument, O Arjuna.
- Verse 3 of 5Bhagavad Gita 18.58 →
mach-chittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣhyasi atha chet tvam ahankārān na śhroṣhyasi vinaṅkṣhyasi
Fixing your mind on Me, you shall, by My grace, overcome all obstacles; but if you will not hear Me due to egoism, you shall perish.
- Verse 4 of 5Bhagavad Gita 2.47 →
karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi
You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.
- Verse 5 of 5Bhagavad Gita 3.19 →
tasmād asaktaḥ satataṁ kāryaṁ karma samāchara asakto hyācharan karma param āpnoti pūruṣhaḥ
Therefore, without attachment, always perform the actions that should be done; for by performing actions without attachment, one reaches the Supreme.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦
What does the Bhagavad Gita say to encourage someone?
Krishna's strongest words of encouragement are that no good effort is lost (6.40), the divine carries the burdens of the devoted (9.22), and even a fallen seeker is reborn into circumstances where they can resume the path (6.41–43).
Which Gita verses are most encouraging?
Gita 6.40 (no good effort wasted), 9.22 (yoga-kshema), 18.66 (surrender, do not grieve), 4.7 (whenever dharma declines, the divine appears), and 2.40 (even a little of this practice protects) are widely loved.
How can the Gita encourage me when I feel low?
Read one short verse slowly, twice. Let the truth of it sit longer than the mood you're in. Krishna's voice, met honestly, is a steady hand on the shoulder.
