Gita Verses on Self-Confidence and Fearlessness

Strength & Growth

Fear arises when we forget our true nature. The Gita reminds us: you are the eternal soul, birthless and deathless. What then is there to fear?

This guide brings together 5 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on self-confidence and fearlessness, drawn from chapters 2, 6, 16 and 18.

Self-confidence in the Gita is rooted in something deeper than achievement — in the recognition that your inmost self is steady, unborn and never lost. From that ground, confidence stops needing constant proof.

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Let a person lift himself by his own self; let him not degrade himself. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is its enemy.

klaibyaṁ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitat tvayyupapadyate kṣhudraṁ hṛidaya-daurbalyaṁ tyaktvottiṣhṭha parantapa

Do not yield to impotence, O Arjuna, son of Pritha. It does not befit you. Cast off this mean weakness of the heart! Stand up, O conqueror of foes!

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha abhayaṁ sattva-sanśhuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ dānaṁ damaśh cha yajñaśh cha svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam

The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and yoga, almsgiving, control of the senses, sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerity, and straightforwardness.

mach-chittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣhyasi atha chet tvam ahankārān na śhroṣhyasi vinaṅkṣhyasi

Fixing your mind on Me, you shall, by My grace, overcome all obstacles; but if you will not hear Me due to egoism, you shall perish.

mātrā-sparśhās tu kaunteya śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ āgamāpāyino ’nityās tans-titikṣhasva bhārata

The contact of the senses with the objects, O son of Kunti, which causes heat and cold, pleasure and pain, has a beginning and an end; they are impermanent; endure them bravely, O Arjuna.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about self-confidence?

Krishna teaches that the true self is indestructible (2.20), that you can lift yourself by your own effort (6.5), and that with the divine within, no obstacle is final (18.58). Confidence rests on what cannot be taken away.

Which Gita verses build self-confidence?

Gita 6.5 (be your own friend), 2.20 (the soul is never destroyed), 18.58 (with grace, cross all obstacles), 9.31 (no devotee of mine is lost), and 16.1–3 (your divine qualities) are favourites for confidence.

How do I gain self-confidence using the Gita?

Identify less with passing moods and more with the steady awareness behind them. The awareness has nothing to prove; from there, action flows with quiet confidence.
