Mind & Emotions

How do you stop living in the past or future? The Gita's core teaching — act fully now, without anxiety over results — is the original mindfulness. These shlokas show how to release worry about the future and regret over the past, and live wholly in the present.

This guide brings together 6 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on living in the present moment, drawn from chapters 2, 3, 6 and 12.

The Gita's present-moment teaching is woven into karma yoga — full attention to the work in front of you, freedom from clinging to past or future, the steady mind that doesn't time-travel. Now is the only place action can actually happen.

karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi

You have a right to action alone, never to its fruits. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.

Perform your bounden duty, for action is superior to inaction, and even the maintenance of the body would not be possible for you through inaction.

    yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-cheṣhṭasya karmasu yukta-svapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

Yoga becomes the destroyer of pain for him who is moderate in eating and recreation (such as walking, etc.), who exercises moderation in action, and who is moderate in sleep and wakefulness.

mātrā-sparśhās tu kaunteya śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ āgamāpāyino ’nityās tans-titikṣhasva bhārata

The contact of the senses with the objects, O son of Kunti, which causes heat and cold, pleasure and pain, has a beginning and an end; they are impermanent; endure them bravely, O Arjuna.

buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛita-duṣhkṛite tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśhalam

Endowed with wisdom and evenness of mind, one casts off in this life both good and evil deeds; therefore, devote yourself to Yoga; Yoga is skill in action.

yasmān nodvijate loko lokān nodvijate ca yaḥ harṣāmarṣa-bhayodvegair mukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ

He by whom the world is not disturbed and who is not disturbed by the world, who is free from joy, envy, fear and anxiety — he is dear to me.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about living in the present?

Krishna teaches that you have a right to action, never to the fruits (2.47), and that the steady mind acts here, now, without dwelling on what's gone or chasing what hasn't come. Presence is the natural climate of skilful action.

Which Gita verses are about living in the present?

Gita 2.47 (act now, release the fruit), 2.48 (samatva), 4.18 (action in inaction, inaction in action), 6.26 (return the wandering mind), and 12.13–14 (the present-tense devotee) all point to presence.

How do I live in the present using the Gita?

Whatever you are doing now, do it fully and let past and future wait their turn. Each time the mind drifts, bring it back — gently, often. Presence is built by returning.
