Gita Verses on Building Self-Worth and Confidence

Strength & Growth

When the world tells you you're not enough, the Gita speaks the opposite truth: you are the eternal soul — vast, divine, and complete. These shlokas rebuild confidence from the ground of self-knowledge.

This guide brings together 4 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on building self-worth and confidence, drawn from chapters 2, 6, 16 and 18.

The Gita's view of self-worth is foundational: every being shares in the divine, and the inmost self is unborn, imperishable, and beyond what anyone can give or take. Worth is not earned by performance.

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

Let a person lift himself by his own self; let him not degrade himself. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is its enemy.

klaibyaṁ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitat tvayyupapadyate kṣhudraṁ hṛidaya-daurbalyaṁ tyaktvottiṣhṭha parantapa

Do not yield to impotence, O Arjuna, son of Pritha. It does not befit you. Cast off this mean weakness of the heart! Stand up, O conqueror of foes!

śhrī-bhagavān uvācha abhayaṁ sattva-sanśhuddhir jñāna-yoga-vyavasthitiḥ dānaṁ damaśh cha yajñaśh cha svādhyāyas tapa ārjavam

The Blessed Lord said: Fearlessness, purity of heart, steadfastness in knowledge and yoga, almsgiving, control of the senses, sacrifice, study of scriptures, austerity, and straightforwardness.

mach-chittaḥ sarva-durgāṇi mat-prasādāt tariṣhyasi atha chet tvam ahankārān na śhroṣhyasi vinaṅkṣhyasi

Fixing your mind on Me, you shall, by My grace, overcome all obstacles; but if you will not hear Me due to egoism, you shall perish.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions ✦

What does the Bhagavad Gita say about self-worth?

Krishna teaches that the individual soul is an eternal part of him (15.7) and is seated in the heart of all beings (15.15). Your worth doesn't depend on achievement; it rests in what you fundamentally are.

Which Gita verses build self-worth?

Gita 15.7 (you are an eternal part of the divine), 15.15 (the divine sits in your heart), 2.20 (the Self is unborn, imperishable), 9.31 (no devotee is ever lost), and 18.65 (you are very dear to me) directly affirm worth.

How do I build self-worth using the Gita?

When the inner critic speaks, gently remind yourself what you are at root — not the role, not the resume. Return to that recognition often; it slowly becomes the ground you stand on.
