Gita Verses on Letting Go of the Past and Regret

Mind & Emotions

How do you stop dwelling on the past? The Gita teaches that the wise neither grieve over what is gone nor crave what is not yet here. These shlokas help you release regret, forgive yourself, and act freely in the present without the weight of yesterday.

This guide brings together 6 verses from the Bhagavad Gita on letting go of the past and regret, drawn from chapters 2, 4, 5, 16 and 18.

The Gita doesn't ask you to deny the past — it asks you to stop being held by it. What is done is done; the next right action is the one you can actually do.

jātasya hi dhruvo mṛityur dhruvaṁ janma mṛitasya cha tasmād aparihārye ’rthe na tvaṁ śhochitum arhasi

For the born, death is certain, and for the dead, birth is certain; therefore, you should not grieve over the inevitable.

tri-vidhaṁ narakasyedaṁ dvāraṁ nāśhanam ātmanaḥ kāmaḥ krodhas tathā lobhas tasmād etat trayaṁ tyajet

There are three gates to this hell, destructive of the self: lust, anger, and greed; therefore, one should abandon these three.

He who does actions, offering them to Brahman and abandoning attachment, is not tainted by sin, just as a lotus leaf is not tainted by water.

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja ahaṁ tvā sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

Abandoning all duties, take refuge in me alone. I shall liberate you from all sins; do not grieve.

buddhi-yukto jahātīha ubhe sukṛita-duṣhkṛite tasmād yogāya yujyasva yogaḥ karmasu kauśhalam

Endowed with wisdom and evenness of mind, one casts off in this life both good and evil deeds; therefore, devote yourself to Yoga; Yoga is skill in action.

yathaidhānsi samiddho ’gnir bhasma-sāt kurute ’rjuna jñānāgniḥ sarva-karmāṇi bhasma-sāt kurute tathā

As the blazing fire reduces fuel to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all actions to ash.
